ARTIST FEATURE-VAULT CITY x STALLAN
When you create a beer like Fruits of the Forest, Triple Stacked Breakfast Waffle, the artwork needs to be just as bold and unforgettable as the flavours inside. Enter Stallan, the creative artist behind the iconic label design and unique character development— back for their fourth collaboration with us. Their signature style brings this release to life with vibrant colours, intricate details, and a design that perfectly captures the legendary fruit medley and a triple serving of maple-drenched breakfast waffles...
As with every label they’ve designed for us, Vaulter, our beloved Bigfoot-inspired creature, takes centre stage—once again exploring a surreal, maple-drenched breakfast. We caught up with Stallan to chat about their artistic process, the inspiration behind this latest piece, and what it’s been like bringing Vaulter to life once again for another Vault City release.
CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF?
Hi! I'm Stuart Allan or STALLAN as you may know me. I'm an artist/illustrator from Aberdeen, Scotland. I graduated from Grays School of Art where I specialised in traditional portrait painting. Over the years I've developed a more illustrative style which I utilise in most of my work today. At the moment the majority of the work I do is digital, but I still like to mix it up from time to time and make some physical work like paintings or woodcuts.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST ARTISTIC INFLUENCES OR INSPIRATIONS?
I get a lot of inspiration from pop culture; Movies, music etc. Growing up I was obsessed with dinosaurs, sharks or any gnarly creature with a lot of teeth! Medieval stuff too. Big swords, armour etc. some of my favourite artists; Tom Newell, Craig Robson (Daggersforteeth), Matt Stikker (Bargainbinblasphemy), Mike Mignola, Frank Miller, David Choe… I could go on all day!
HOW DID THIS COLLABORATION WITH VAULT CITY COME ABOUT?
It was not long after I started working with Thiccc sauce. Luca messaged me asking if I was keen to draw something weird for a collab sauce he was making with Vault. Obviously I said yes and we’re back again for round 4!
CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS?
For this one, having already established Vaulter as a character, it was a case of “what can I have him and his weird little arms doing?"
I was inspired by a tattoo I saw of a frog on a toadstool, playing a banjo. The Sporks and Crocs just made sense at the time!
HOW DID YOU INTERPRET THE "FRUITS OF THE FORREST" THEME VISUALLY?
If I remember correctly, Luca from Thiccc had the idea for some kind of Bigfoot in the forest. I took that and tried to make it weird and a bit “magical” with the addition of the glowing waffles, as if they were the treasure this creature had been searching for.
IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE THE FINAL ARTWORK IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Weird, Hairy, Majestic!
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO SEE YOUR ARTWORK ON A VAULT CITY BEER CAN?
I love to see my stuff on stuff!
For years I’d dreamed of seeing my artwork on beer cans and for that to actually become a reality and work with Vault City, who I was already a fan of feels really, really great!
