Mango to the Masses - Why we're changing our top-selling sour

Triple Fruited Mango

We’ve always prided ourselves on transparency at Vault City, and when there’s a big decision or a change being made, we like to share the reasons why. We recently announced that we’re changing the ABV of Triple Fruited Mango and phasing in a new 4.8% version of our best-selling sour over the coming months. Now, we know what you’re thinking… If it’s so popular, why change it?

Why change the ABV?

We sell a lot of cans of Triple Fruited Mango. It’s a refreshing, tropical sour that’s absolutely packed with juicy Alphonso mango which perfectly complements our house mixed culture. It’s available in the craft beer aisle of most major UK supermarkets, as well as a tonne of export countries around the world.

As much as we love seeing people grabbing a can to take home, we want to start selling more kegs of Triple Fruited Mango alongside our other core range beers like Strawberry Sundae and Cloudy Lemonade. We know the higher ABV can sometimes make it a harder sell for pubs and bars looking to offer a session-strength core range sour on tap.

We spoke to our trade customers and our community online to get their thoughts and found a lot of people were requesting straight mango session sours like we did back in 2021. In general we’re seeing consumer trends of lower ABVs in craft beer and more moderation with lower strength beers So, we decided that 4.8% could be the sweet spot for a sessionable sour.

Is it still Triple Fruited?

Yes, absolutely. We haven’t reduced the volume of mango in our recipe – we’ve just adjusted the malt bill to bring the ABV down a little.

We always want to maintain the vibrant colour and fruit forward flavour to deliver that triple serving of rich, juicy tropical fruit.

Mini Mangoes packed a punch

We brew at least 6 new beers every month, so we had plenty of opportunities to trial a mango sour at a lower ABV. Back in May we released a table strength sour called Mini Mangoes, and we were really happy with the depth of flavour and punchiness we could get even at 3.3%. So, that gave us a lot of confidence with what we could do around the 4-5% mark if (and when) we decided to change Triple Fruited Mango.

More Mango for your Money

With the decision to reduce the ABV of Triple Fruited Mango, we’ve also decided to bring the price down for our new session strength sour. We’re working with retailers on an RRP of £3 for the new Triple Fruited Mango and are matching this on our web shop too.

Does a lower shelf price mean a stricter budget to brew the beer? It can, but definitely not here. We’ve actually increased the fruiting rate to make Triple Fruited Mango punchier than ever.

How are we able to do that you might ask – well, it all comes down to beer duty (or tax paid per litre of beer produced). Our overall average ABV and total production volume over 12 months is what determines our duty rate. So, if we’re producing more Triple Fruited Mango than anything else, the production of that beer in hectolitres will affect the duty rate of our entire brewery. Reducing the ABV to 4.8% helps us out overall and makes more room for higher strength sours and stouts in our rotational releases.

More Mango to the Masses

At the end of the day, our goal is to make Triple Fruited Mango more accessible to everyone. By lowering the ABV, we’re hoping to bring our best-selling sour to even more places, without sacrificing the incredible flavour.

We’re launching a deal for direct trade customers to get their hands on the new fresh kegs of 4.8% Triple Fruited Mango, with an introductory offer for the first 100 kegs ordered. Want to get involved? Head to our Sellar store here on Monday, while stocks last!
